Devotions:
“Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!”
Psalms 31:19 KJV
“Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.”
Psalms 33:18-19 KJV
“The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.”
Psalms 34:7-10 KJV
The fear of the Lord has multiple benefits but it is more than obedience. Then fear of the Lord is referencing Him that is knowing that He is the wisdom of the universe and acting in accord with that. So that we diligently seek His guidance not out of just wanting to obey Him out of fear of retribution but because we know that His is the only way. Too often we think that our wisdom and understanding is at least equal to God's and that our opinion is an option along with God's opinion.
The fear of the Lord is knowing that God's way is the only way and consciously choosing His way above all else. It is not a matter of offending God, that was taken care of by Jesus, but it is recognizing the superiority of God's way and choosing it even over circumstances and experiences contrary to Him.
