"For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5:4-5 KJV)
So often we try to overcome the world and the prince of this world, the devil, through the efforts of our flesh. But our flesh is not yet experienced redemption. Our flesh is not yet born of God so it cannot overcome the world. When we just grit our teeth and try harder or make a more sinceer resolution to do better we fail because we are trying to do it by the power of the flesh and we are giving the sin all the attention instead of the deliverer, Jesus. Jesus does not deliver us from the outside but from His presence inside, by the Holy Spirit within us,
We must recognize what is born of God, our spirit and by the new birth we have been made righteous and holy so that God the Spirit can dwell in our spirit as His temple. We also recognize that no sin is profitable but instead detrimental. So it is highly desireable on our part to part with sin, that is overcome it. Once again it is what is born of God that overcomes the world. It is Christ in us the hope of glory, so we in every situation choose to be Jesus minded in the midst of trials and tribulations and temptations. Jesus is the overcomer within us and the ultimate overcoming that He did was when He was raised from the dead after bearing our sins and the full penalty for those sins.
The second verse John says that who is he that overcomes the world but `he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is the Messiah that came into the world to save us. He is the full expression of the Father God to us. He came as a deliverer and He delivers by killing us in Him and giving us resurrection life. Now we must learn to walk in that resurrection life.
