Resting in God

Devotions:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 KJV
So often we make Christianity hard and difficult. When we do understand grace we end up imposing on ourselves and others a works mentality. This is what Jesus is addressing. Because the Jews were trying to earn their salvation through keeping the law, they had put themselves under a burden that they could not bear. Jesus call was for them to look to Him exculsively for their salvation. He said that He would give them rest, that is that their salvation did rely upon their works but upon His works totally. This rest comes from a confidence in His finished work that He would preform at the cross. The yoke that He talks about is to walk with the Father. Our obedience is our response to the prompting of the Holy Spirit who empowers us to obey when we yield to Him. Jesus said that He was meek and lowly of heart. His salvation is available to everyone who would accept it, no matter how humble your station in life, no matter how bad a sinner you are.
His burden is strange in that it is really no burden. The burden of the cross in that Jesus did the total work and He ask us to accept the work without any of our input needed. Jesus is our salvation.
