It Is Finished

Devotions:

“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” John‬ ‭19:30‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus said it is finished. What was He talking about? Our salvation was not finished until He rose from the dead and sprinkled His blood before the throne of God. What was finished was the fulfillment of the Old Covenant.

“When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.” ‭Hebrews‬ ‭8:13‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Jesus had fulfilled the Covenant of Law which said that you must act perfectly to be accepted by God. The Law showed our imperfection but it could not empower us to fulfill it. Jesus fulfilled the Law to the letter and then took our sins upon Himself and died under the penalty of the Law in our place. His death on the cross was the fulfilling of the penalty for sin.

“For Christ is the end of the law. And because of him, God has transferred his perfect righteousness to all who believe.” ‭Romans‬ ‭10:4‬ ‭TPT‬‬

We are no longer under the Law of Moses. We walk by an new law, the law of he Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. The Law of Moses could not deal with who a person was. It could only show him how to act right, but he was not able to act right because his nature was one of sin. The new creation took away the man of sin and gave us a new nature, the righteousness of God in Christ. Then God was able to put His Holy Spirit upon us to enable us to do the work that He has set aside for us to do. All of this based on the finished work of Jesus. We see part of it in His words on the cross but the culmination of it when He was seated at the right hand of the Father. We cannot add to this work nor take away from it. It is eternally ours.
