“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
Ephesians 6:18 KJV
At the end of his treatise on the armor of God, Paul tells us to pray always with all prayer. One thing that Paul does not mention in the armor are spears that the soldier always took with him. Rick Renner in His book on the armor of God, states that the spears are represented by our prayers. When a soldier would become a soldier he did not immediately put on the armor and go into battle. He would have surely been defeated. Instead he would spend months training to build a foundation, a familiarity and a skill with the armor and weapons. Without this foundation he would be an easy prey for the enemy.
With our armor it is the same way. We need training and skill in how to use the equipment. In prayer we need to build a foundation on the word of God of scriptures that promise us what we are asking for and then spend time meditating on the word to allow it to build faith in us before we ask. (Sometimes this not possible but most of the time it is.). As we meditate on the word it builds faith in us and assurance of the will of the Father to do what He has said that He will do, answer our prayers.
“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”
1 Thessalonians 2:13 KJV
As we meditate on the word of God our excitement and expectation grows so when we are ready to ask we know that we will receive what we ask for. Too often we ask without building this foundation and we have no expectations of receiving just a wish or thought that God might do something if we ask long enough. Then the enemy has no trouble defeating us and we give up prayer as a bad idea. But if we take the time to build our foundation on the word of God and spend the time to establish it in our hearts, we can be assured of a positive answer every time.
