Inquire to Be Led By the Spirit

Devotions:
David was the best king that Israel ever had and He was a great king by world standards also. One of the factors that made him a great leader was his reliance upon the Lord. He had experienced the Lord at an early age as a shepherd boy keeping his fathers sheep. He spent the long hours playing his harp and singing to the Lord. He was known as the sweet psalmist of Israel. From this intimacy with the Lord, He inhabits the praises of His people, David had a confidence in the Lord and His word. When the lion and the bear attacked the flock, David pursued and overtook the lion and the bear and killed them because he was relying on his covenant with God.
So in 1 Samuel 17, David goes against a mighty giant warrior, Goliath. David goes out not in his own strength but the strength of the covenant of his God. He called Goliath an uncircumcised Philistine. That is the Philistine had no covenant with the living God.
“And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.”
1 Chronicles 14:10, 14 KJV
Here we see David as King of Israel and the Philistine armies come against him. He does not immediately go against them without enquiring of the Lord as to whether he should, that is will God give the armies into his hand and defeat them for David. Both times God said go us but the second time God told him not to go up directly but to circle around the enemy. David obeyed and had a great victory both times.
We walk in failure when we just look to our own couuncil or the council of other me rather than the council of God. We have a better covenant based on better promises. We have more of an open door to heaven than David did. But we must believe we hear from God, and obey what He shows us to do. God will bear witness with our spirit and show us things to come and how to deal with situations in our lives. It is our privilege to be led by the Spirit of God.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
Romans 8:14 KJV
