Honoring God’s Word

“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”

The way that the word of God is effective in bringing us salvation is first we must know it is God’s word, the truth. If we take another authority’s word over what the word of God says then we demote the word of God to the level of men. God’s word must be superior in our lives to all other words not matter who says them. We must also take the word of God as authoritative so when circumstances seem contradict the word of God, we start looking to where we have misunderstood the word of God. We must believe the word to the extent that we stake our lives on it. We stand on the word, but we also ask for wisdom lest we have misunderstood what God has said and based our confidence on an error.

That is why we need to study an d meditate on the word of God and not read something into it that is not there. We all have our presumptions that we carry with us to the word of God. These are glasses through which we view the word that distort what God has said. The Holy Spirit is our teacher. We must learn to pay attention to our teacher. He teaches in line with the word of God. He will teach us things that seem contrary to our natural thinking and we must be willing to change our way of thinking.

We also submit what we have heard to spiritual men and women to get confirmation that we have heard accurately. The final authority is the word of God.
