“He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:3-4 KJV
As God is leading us we are walking through the valley of he shadow of death. This valley is the present physical life on this earth. It is not something that we go through when we die. When Adam sinned he caste the whole of creation into death because he was the one in charge of the whole creation.
So we have a guide down here on the earth that will protect us from the enemy and lead us around his snares and traps. As we follow our guide, the Holy Spirit, we have no fear of evil because He loves us and protects us. It is only when we get away from Him do we inter the enemies territory. Of course the enemy will attack us any way that he can and his attack on us does not necessarily show disobedience because we are on the enemies territory. When we are attacked we have the word, the promises of God to stand on and the name of Jesus to use against all the wiles of the enemy. God’s word will never fail and the name of Jesus every knee must bow. We have been given authority to use that name. If we do not have faith in His word nor in the name of Jesus then we are left to be victims of the enemy. The shepherd had a rod and a staff to protect the sheep and he was confident in his ability to use them. As we use the word of God and the name of Jesus, our LORD will back us up and drive away the enemy.
To survive here on earth, we need the leading of the Holy Spirit and to know how to stand on the word of God and use the name of Jesus.
