““Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:3 MEV
To be poor in spirit is to know that I have nothing within myself that can save me. It is only God that can. God does not judge me by my actions but by the work of Jesus. The more I understand who I am in Christ, the more my actions are in line with who God has made me and the more in line with God. Actions of sin come out of not understanding God’s love for me. To to be poor in spirit then is to look exclusively at the finished work of Jesus and not my own efforts to save myself by trying to free myself from sin. Our freedom from sin comes as we meditate on the word of God until we truly believe that what God has said is true. When we see ourselves as the righteousness of God we will then act that way. If we acknowledge in our mind that the word of God is true but it does not change our behavior, we have not really believed that we are the righteousness of God in Christ. We are only giving mental agreement to the truth.
The kingdom of heaven is ours as a gift from God. We cannot merit it nor earn it and we do not deserve it. To be poor in spirit is to humbly receive what God has done .
“and said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.” Luke 9:48 KJV
Not only do we receive our salvation as a free gift but we also grow in that salvation by our humility before God. We honor God as God and know that we are nothing in ourselves in comparison to Him. But we are in Christ Jesus and He is in us. Our salvation is learning to walk by the spirit , the life of Jesus within us in every aspect of our lives.
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5 KJV
